Fakespace, Inc. Expands The Immersive WorkBench Product Family

The IWB-50 Provides Individual Users With Easy Access To Virtual Models For Hands-On Training Applications

Mountain View, Calif. – December 1, 1997 - Fakespace, Inc. today announced that it has expanded the Immersive WorkBench™ product family. At this week’s Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), in Orlando, Florida, Fakespace unveiled the IWB-50, a projected-image table designed to deliver hands-on accessibility to computer-generated 3D visualizations for individual users. The original Immersive WorkBench, from Fakespace, Inc. (used by organizations ranging from NASA Ames, and Stanford University Hospital to Naval Research Lab (NRL) and Ford Motor Company) supports collaborative work with virtual models for groups of up to eight viewers. The IWB-50 is a smaller scale, lower priced system that delivers comparable functionality to one or two users. "At Fakespace, our goal is to provide the best professional tools for working with virtual reality," said David Eggleston, vice president of sales and marketing at Fakespace, Inc. "The Immersive WorkBench is a cost effective solution for military command and control applications, providing fluid interaction with spatial data in a ‘virtual sandtable’ application. Providing the same fluid interaction on a smaller scale, the IWB-50 is an ideal individual training device for numerous applications."

One target application for the IWB-50 is for hands-on military training. To practice and learn tasks before approaching mechanical problems in the field, the IWB-50 can serve as a Part Task Trainer for fault isolation and repairs. The system offers several advantages over traditional panel trainers used by the U. S. military: 1. Working with realistic 3D models decreases training time over 2D systems. 2. Because the 3D models projected on the IWB-50 are software generated, one piece of equipment can function as a trainer for numerous tasks, ranging from circuitry to hydraulics for tanks, trucks, aircraft and weapons. 3. Additionally, the IWB promises a much longer life than traditional panel trainers, since software can be easily updated to keep pace with rapidly changing technology.

The IWB-50 is based on the BARCO (Belgium American Radio Company) Baron projected image table. Its screen measures 67-in. diagonally, and it incorporates a 210 ANSI lumen projector. Fakespace integrates the display with software, 3D glasses, and PINCH™ gloves, and also provides services to integrate 3D software applications with the IWB system. Available immediately, the IWB-50 sells for $60,000. The Immersive WorkBench from Fakespace, Inc. is a virtual model display that supports natural interaction with computer-generated 3D imagery, and enables users to manipulate virtual objects in the same "hands-on" way they work with real objects on a desk or table. Its 100-inch-by-75-inch (90-in. diagonal) viewing surface, moves from horizontal toward vertical, so that the reachable work area and viewing volume can be adjusted for individual preferences and application specific demands. Available with a Dual User Option (DUO), it is the only virtual model display system that enables two different head-tracked viewpoints of a single 3D visualization, enabling extremely realistic hands-on collaboration.

The IWB family of products is available with a range of price/performance projection systems for all lighting conditions. Fakespace, Inc. is the leading supplier of 3D immersive visualization systems used to interact with virtual environments created for applications in education and training, scientific and commercial research, product design and engineering, and location-based entertainment.

The company's family of high-resolution immersive BOOM (Binocular Omni-Orientation Monitor) displays is comprised of the BOOM3C™, the Fakespace Simulation System (FS2™) and the PUSH™ Desktop Display. Other products include PINCH hand gesture interface systems, hardware and software for integrating applications into 3D visualization systems, and consulting services for applications development. Headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., the privately-held company has been profitable since its founding in 1988.
