Mechdyne Announces World's First Commercially Available PC-Based Surround-Screen Virtual Reality System Marshalltown, IA - June 6, 1999 - Mechdyne Corporation, an Iowa-based engineering company, announces the world’s first commercially available PC-based surround screen virtual reality (SSVR) system. Mechdyne developed the CAVE™-like multipleprojector PC-based system for the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) located in Hsinchu, Taiwan. A key ITRI researcher says, "This system is like a dream." This system uses five Compaq Professional Series Windows-based machines, Mechdyne’s proprietary Distributed Image Generation (DIG™) software, and genlocking hardware necessary to synchronize the different graphics hardware together. The system also uses the DirectX™/Direct3D™ API. Mechdyne is currently developing software for OpenGL-based applications to leverage DIG™ technology, allowing software to run on either NT- or Windows-based operating systems. James Gruening, Mechdyne, says, "This turn-key system has reduced the cost of a commercially available surround-screen immersive visualization system, including the graphics computer by at least a factor of two. This system enables users to run a variety of PC-only applications in an SSVR system. While this system does not have the computational performance available with higher-end graphics hardware, it is suitable for and very capable of providing the benefits of an SSVR to a broader range of users." Mechdyne’s strong commitment to engineering allows clients to choose from a variety of different sizes, projector types, and configurations. Standard off-the-shelf systems consist of a 12’x12’x10’ and a 10’x10’x9’ systems. Custom configurations are also possible. Different types and number of projectors (CRT or LCD; 1, 2, or 4 per wall) provide varying levels of brightness and resolution depending upon the end-users applications and resources. ### About Mechdyne Corporation Mechdyne Corporation is the world’s largest company dedicated to consulting and development of immersive, networked and collaborative visualization solutions.
