Mechdyne Building Unique Visualization Facility for Penn State University

Marshalltown, IA - February 22, 2000 - Mechdyne Corporation, of Marshalltown, Iowa, announced today that it is building a unique four-sided surround screen virtual reality (SSVR) device for Penn State University (PSU). The system will aid researchers in PSU's Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) in the development and research of undersea science and technology, fluid dynamics, signal and image processing, training, modeling and simulation.

Mechdyne was awarded the contract for the SSVR system from a field of three solution providers. The system will reside in the Synthetic Environment Applications Lab (SEA Lab). Completion is expected in late March.

"This system brings a variety of possibilities to ARL. It will allow our researchers the visual insight for us to remain among the world's leaders in undersea technology and industrial research and development," said Dr. Richard Stern, Deputy Director of PSU's Applied Research Laboratory.

The system utilizes Mechdyne's MagicDoor™, which doubles as a fourth vertical viewing surface and encloses the SSVR device. Mechdyne is the first company in its market to offer an off-the-shelf solution such as the MagicDoor.™ Mechdyne engineered the CAVE-like projection system to include upgrade capabilities should PSU researcher decide to enhance the system by adding a projected floor.

"Mechdyne possesses a unique engineering expertise that allowed them to design a turnkey system customized to meet our immediate needs with the capability for upgrade built in," said Tim Shaw, Head of the Synthetic Environment Applications Lab.

Penn State University's Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) has been solving technology-based issues for the U.S. Navy for over fifty years. While ARL has served as a Center of Excellence in undersea technology, it is also largely responsible for Penn State's ranking as second in the nation in industrial R&D. ARL's efforts are supported by more than 900 scientists, engineers, technicians, support staff, and students in addition to 200 associate members.

Mechdyne Corporation specializes in one-to-one, large-scale, and multi-screen virtual reality systems, as well as high-fidelity simulations, haptics, robotics, engineering consulting, and dynamic reconstruction. In addition to Mechdyne systems on four continents, Mechdyne has designed, installed, and serviced systems for several Fortune 500 companies with applications ranging from aerospace to automotive design and simulation to oil and gas exploration.

Mechdyne clients use VR systems for a variety of applications, including engineering design review, virtual prototyping, manufacturing process simulation and review, factory layouts, product flow, and marketing. The systems also shorten "time to insight" and allow a collaborative environment for sharing ideas.

Mechdyne's relationships and alliances with respected equipment and software suppliers allow the Company to serve as a single-source or "turn-key" provider of engineering, installation, integration, service, and support for all visual and audio systems. Mechdyne offers several copyrighted software programs, expertise in melding the many components of virtual reality, in-house fabrication and design proofing, and unparalleled responsiveness to client requests. In four years, the company has forged a number of advancements in the technology used in visualization and simulation systems, and has developed a client base covering North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
