Fakespace Systems Delivers Large-Scale Visualization System To Aircraft Manufacturer

Embraer Selects WorkWall™ Display System For Virtual Prototyping, Presentation Applications In New Visualization Center; Reduces Time-To-Market For Regional Jet Designs

Kitchener, ON - May 31, 2000 - Fakespace Systems Inc. today announced that it has installed an immersive WorkWall™ for Embraer, one of the world’s top regional jet manufacturers, located in São Jose dos Campos, Brazil. Embraer (Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica S.A.) uses the 7-1/2-ft. x 20-ft. stereoscopic wall display for design reviews and marketing presentations in its new Visualization Center, which it built to aid in the design and development of the new ERJ170/ERJ190 family of commercial aircraft.

The WorkWall is a flat screen, rear-projection display system that supports interactive viewing of large-scale computer-generated visualizations, simulations and prototypes. For highly accurate viewing and manipulation of two-dimensional (2D) and stereoscopic models in applications such as product design and virtual prototyping, the WorkWall enables designers to view complex assemblies in precise detail. It also provides large-scale overviews of new designs for customer presentations and marketing.

“We have found that virtual prototyping and large-scale visualization significantly reduce time-to-market for new aircraft,” said Hugo Resende, Technology Development Manager at Embraer. “We selected the WorkWall from Fakespace Systems following a four month pilot project using a single projector version of the display. In addition to proving its value for product design and engineering, the WorkWall added tremendous impact to customer presentations.”

When used with 3D modeling software, such as Catia from Dassault Systemes, and visualized using DMU Navigator from Dassault Systemes and Division Reality from PTC, the WorkWall makes it easy for multidisciplinary teams to evaluate digital mock-ups and virtual prototypes early in the design cycle. For airline customers, it also provides an easy to understand model of layout, design and configuration options, facilitating crucial purchase decisions.

Embraer is using the WorkWall as part of a program to speed time-to-market and reduce design rework, concurrent with an expansion of product lines and monthly manufacturing capacity. The display system is part of a complete RealityCenter™, which is driven by an SGI™ Onyx2™ InfiniteReality® visualization supercomputer. Based on three, high-resolution, edge-blended, CRT projectors, the WorkWall provides crisp, stereoscopic imagery when viewed with 3D shutter glasses. The visualization center also includes a head-mounted display (HMD), a virtual reality glove system, a motion tracker system, and the Fakespace NavPod™ navigation device for use in conjunction with the WorkWall.

Previously, Embraer relied on standard workstation monitors and costly physical mock-ups to communicate and test design concepts. With the WorkWall, complete assemblies can be viewed stereoscopically, in large- or even full-scale, and even non-technical personnel will be able to intuitively navigate around digital models using the NavPod, which provides a simple handle bar-type steering controller.

Embraer plans to expand its capacity and develop new products, with a first year goal of increasing production from 12 to 16 aircraft per month by December of 2000. The 30-year-old company, headquartered in Sao Jose dos Campos, State of Sao Paulo, is Brazil’s largest exporter.
