Mechdyne Announces North America's First Six-Sided Surround-Screen Visualization Display System

Marshalltown, IA - June 16, 2000 - Mechdyne Corporation, of Marshalltown, Iowa, announced today the completed installation of North America's first commercially available six-sided visualization system. Named C6, the system will be the cornerstone of Iowa State University's (ISU) Virtual Reality Applications Center (VRAC), and will reside in the atrium of the newly constructed Howe Hall Engineering Building. This new technology pushes the envelope of large-scale visualization on many fronts, particularly by offering researchers a wireless immersive experience, and hence for ISU, a powerful research tool.

VRAC will host a press preview for an unveiling of the system Monday, June 19 at 4:00 p.m. in the Howe Hall atrium. The Grand Opening will mark the opening of the Immersive Projection Technology Workshop, an annual conference that showcases the latest in immersive technology for researchers and corporations throughout the world. A second Mechdyne solution, a multi-purpose auditorium, will also be a focal point of the conference. ISU hopes to use the auditorium, C6, and an existing surround-screen solution (also built by Mechdyne) for use with collaborative research between the various locations. According to Associate Director of VRAC, Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira, this could change the face of business worldwide.

"Distributed virtual reality is the future. It will allow researchers or companies with different facilities to share their experiences simultaneously and to interact with the same data. Mechdyne has helped put VRAC at the forefront of this research with the development of the C6."

The C6 features the state-of-the-art in nearly every component including projection technology, wireless tracking, audio, and wireless communication devices. These components, coupled with the system's structure are designed to completely immerse the user in images and sound. The solution is driven with a powerful SGI Onyx2 supercomputer that allows the user to exist in an environment, or virtual world, filled with computer-rendered images.

"Mechdyne's engineers worked in collaboration with VRAC to design, implement, and integrate the C6 with many technologies that still are not released to the general public, and they did this in a very compressed timeframe. This undertaking was a very complex task, and I am not aware of any other company that could pull off this sort of project,” said Dr. James Bernard, Director of ISU's VRAC.

Mechdyne Corporation specializes in one-to-one, large-scale, and multi-screen virtual reality systems, as well as high-fidelity simulators, haptics, robotics, engineering consulting, and dynamic reconstruction. In addition to Mechdyne systems on five continents, the Company has designed, installed, and serviced systems for several Fortune 500 companies with applications ranging from aerospace to automotive design and simulation to oil and gas exploration.

Mechdyne clients use visualization systems for a variety of applications, including engineering design review, virtual prototyping, manufacturing process simulation and review, factory layouts, multivariate analysis, product flow, and marketing. The systems also shorten "time to insight” and allow a collaborative environment for sharing ideas.

Mechdyne's relationships and alliances with respected equipment and software suppliers allow the Company to serve as a single-source or "turnkey” provider of engineering, installation, integration, service, and support for all visual and audio systems. Mechdyne offers several copyrighted software programs, expertise in melding the many components of large-scale visualization systems, in-house fabrication and design proofing, and unparalleled responsiveness to client requests. The company has forged a number of advancements in the technology used in visualization and simulation systems, and has developed a client base covering North America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
