Mechdyne Completes One Of Africa's First Large-Scale Visualization Systems For Chevron Nigeria Limited Marshalltown, IA - May 11, 2001 - Mechdyne Corporation, of Marshalltown, Iowa, announced today the completed installation of a large-scale virtual reality (LSVR) system for Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), the operator of the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture operation in Nigeria. Among the first LSVR installations on the African continent, the system features state-of-the-art computer visualization facilities, including a unique multi-dimensional design that optimizes user fields of view and levels of immersion. The MD Plex™ installed for CNL is powered by a multi-platform computer system, including a Silicon Graphics® (SGI) Onyx® computer and a dual-headed PC, enabling users to run applications from both. The SGI computer, housed in the facility's main computer room with high security and a customized infrastructure, uses fiber optic signals to operate the visualization system remotely. The system also features Mechdyne's proprietary Seamless Corners™, ensuring an uninterrupted image across the multi-dimensional screen design. LCD projectors offer "passive" stereoscopic viewing, allowing users to view images in a lighted room and minimizing required maintenance. Selected projectors feature increased brightness for better graphical imaging. "We chose Mechdyne for this project because they were able to design and install a unique, state-of-the-art system to meet our needs in a remote location," said Steve Dobbs, a CNL Staff Earth Scientist. "Chevron has a long-term strategy to deploy technology directly into operating company offices – where it can have a immediate impact," said Bill Kowalik, Chevron's Senior Staff Research Scientist specializing in Geoscience Visualization. "Installation of the LSVR system at CNL's office in Lagos is the latest example of technology transfer under this strategy. The LSVR has already played a positive role at CNL – multi-disciplinary teams have experienced improved decision-making while planning wells." "Traditionally, oil and gas explorers have been able to visualize only about five percent of the information they collect, whereas a Mechdyne solution allows approximately 80 percent of the information to be analyzed in the same amount of time," explains James Gruening, Mechdyne's Vice President of Worldwide Integration & Technical Services. "By seeing information in a collaborative virtual environment, companies such as CNL have improved their decision-making process and reduced the odds of drilling a dry hole or experiencing problems during the drilling process."
