Mechdyne and SGI Introduce New Visualization System for Institute for Creative Technologies

Marshalltown, IA - August 15, 2001 - Mechdyne Corporation, of Marshalltown, Iowa - along with SGI, of Mountain View, California - has announced the introduction of a new curved-screen visualization system (MD CSVR™) unveiled Sept. 26, 2000 at the Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT), a partnership between the University of Southern California and the US Army.

The large-scale, state-of-the-art system features a wraparound curved screen with a 150- degree horizontal field of view. This configuration offers outstanding immersion, allowing the user to feel completely absorbed in the virtual environment. Powered by an SGI® Onyx2® visualization supercomputer, the Mechdyne system also incorporates digital CRT projectors - a new technology from Barco offering optimal fidelity and the highest resolution images currently available. A touch-screen control system allows seamless operation of complex computer graphics, room control, and other subsystems.

The Army funded the development of ICT in 1999 in an effort to leverage the entertainment industry's creative and storytelling expertise with the computer science community's abilities in networking, artificial intelligence and virtual reality technology. The Army will use the system to create highly realistic training simulations that will help prepare troops for effective decision-making in foreign conflict zones.

"Mechdyne's advanced expertise with visualization technology helped achieve the goals we identified for this project," said James Korris, ICT's Creative Director. "Their system, combined with SGI's state-of-the-art computer graphics hardware, offers the optimal immersion needed to create a totally realistic training environment."

"This system will set the standard for curved-screen, wraparound immersion and image quality," said Kurt Hoffmeister, Mechdyne's Vice President of Engineering. "We are very pleased with the results and our team's ability to meet ICT's very tight deadlines."
