Mechdyne Completes Breakthrough Rear-Projected Curved-Screen Visualization System for Picatinny Arsenal

Marshalltown, IA - March 8, 2002 - Mechdyne Corporation, of Marshalltown, Iowa, has announced the completion of a large-scale visualization system for the United States Army Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. This system, which will be used for small-arms design and development, is among the world's first commercial installations of a rear-projected, curved-screen configuration – a unique design developed and marketed by Mechdyne.

The arsenal's Armament Research Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) will use the system's realistic three-dimensional imaging to create virtual prototypes of new small arms. The system's wraparound screen can also immerse users in virtual environments, enabling simulation applications for product evaluation purposes. This technology will allow researchers to rapidly evaluate and interact with computer-based images and concepts relating to the design, maintenance, training, and use of specific weapon systems. This evaluation is carried out early in the design cycle, eliminating the need for physical fabrications and resulting in more effective and sustainable designs.

Marketed as an MD RCSVR™ (Mechdyne Rear-projected Curved Screen Virtual Reality system), the system's unique curved-screen configuration wraps the image around the user's point of view, optimizing the user's sense of immersion. The system's imagery is rear-projected, enabling users to approach and interact with the virtual scene without casting shadows. Advanced projection technology corrects the image distortion inherent to a curved-screen display.

The system is also capable of supporting design eye-point applications in which the graphical perspective is optimized for the user's viewpoint. This capability provides the fidelity needed for applications such as target acquisition and tracking. The main display is powered by a Silicon Graphics® (SGI) Onyx2® visualization computer and features a high-fidelity surround-sound audio system to effectively re-create weapons simulations. To further maximize system versatility and return on investment, a secondary display utilizing an ultra-bright projection system enables flat-screen business presentations.

Mechdyne is very excited to have designed, developed, and installed one of the first commercial systems of this type, said John Bethel, Mechdyne's Director of Business Development. "This system's superior immersion capabilities and versatility enable a wide range of visualization applications, making it a valuable tool for design, development, simulation, and presentation."
