Mechdyne Unveils Cutting-Edge Visualization System for Army MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa - April 16, 2002 - Mechdyne Corporation, of Marshalltown, Iowa, announced today that it has unveiled a state-of-the-art curved-screen virtual reality (MD CSVR™) system for the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Adelphi, Maryland. This visualization system will be a key component of the ARL/MSRC Supercomputing facility. The ARL MSRC is one of four Department of Defense Major Shared Resource Centers, providing leading edge, high performance computational facilities and technical expertise to the defense community. Department of Defense researchers will use the system for a wide array of applications, including conducting lifelike military simulations, command and control, debriefings, and terrain visualization. ARL's Scientific Visualization Team also plans to use the system to promote the use of scientific visualization within the Department of Defense and to prepare video presentations in support of Department of Defense projects. The state-of-the-art system utilizes a curved-screen configuration that wraps the image around the users' point of view, optimizing the users' sense of immersion. A three-pipe SGI® Onyx® supercomputer generates the system's high-fidelity 3D images, which are projected onto the screen by three edge-blended and geometry-corrected CRT projectors. As with most Mechdyne visualization systems, ARL's new system includes several custom features designed to meet the users' specific needs. A fourth LCD projector is installed into the system to deliver the extra brightness favorable for A/V presentations. A Dolby® 7.1 Surround Sound™ audio system will enhance lifelike combat and other simulation applications. Additional features include DVD and VCR playback capabilities, an AMX control system, a Lecturn with PC connections, and several wireless microphones for presentations and audience interaction. "Mechdyne developed the MD CSVR™ system to fulfill certain needs that were previously missing in the immersive visualization world," said John Bethel, Mechdyne's Director of Business Development. "ARL desired a versatile system that could deliver high-impact imagery over a wide peripheral view for interactive applications as well as provide a forum for group presentations. We are pleased that our system was able to meet these needs and that it will serve as a valuable tool for our country's Department of Defense." ### About Mechdyne Corporation Mechdyne Corporation is the world’s largest company dedicated to consulting and development of immersive, networked and collaborative visualization systems.
