Mechdyne Completes Cornerstone System for University of Colorado's new BP Center for Visualization MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa - July 22, 2002 - Mechdyne Corporation, of Marshalltown, Iowa, has completed a state-of-the-art immersive visualization system for the University of Colorado (CU) at Boulder. The state-of-the-art reconfigurable MD Flex™ system is the cornerstone visualization system of the university's new BP Center for Visualization. This new research center was founded by a major multimillion dollar donation from BP and a million dollar gift from Landmark Graphics Corporation. Developed and marketed exclusively by Mechdyne, the MD Flex™ system is the world’s first commercially available reconfigurable large-scale visualization system. The university's MD Flex™ features three vertical panels and a floor projection surface that can be quickly and easily configured as a 12x12x10-foot walk-in environment, an angled, interactive theater, or a single, flat display wall. High-fidelity 2D and 3D images are projected from behind the screens, allowing users to approach and interact with the imagery from any angle without casting shadows. The system also features tracking technology to track the position and orientation of a user's head and display the correct scenery for that user's point of view. Mechdyne, working with SGI®, integrated an SGI® Onyx® 3800 visualization supercomputer to power the system and enable users to manipulate projected data and imagery in real time. This capability permits applications such as design review and engineering, complex data analysis, critical and/or hazardous training, and command and control operations. The center will use the MD Flex™ system to serve its four main purposes: to facilitate basic research of visualization technology; to develop and enhance the technology for a range of disciplines; to educate students about the technology; and to commercialize intellectual property to help sustain the research and development program. More specifically, the center's initial priority will be to expand oil and gas exploration visualization applications; however, many CU faculty members are interested in using the system to conduct research in their respective areas of expertise. For example, the aerospace faculty is interested in using the system to gain insight into the airflow dynamics over the body of an airplane and to envision on-orbit space vehicle assembly and spacecraft repair. Immersive visualization technology has applications for a wide variety of disciplines, including agriculture and forestry, health sciences, military strategy, atmospheric and environmental sciences, and even lunar and Mars exploration. "We are excited about the implementation of Mechdyne's visualization system in our new BP Center for Visualization, and about the positive effects it will have on the center, CU students, the state, and the Rocky Mountain region for many years to come," said University of Colorado President Elizabeth Hoffman. "This state-of-the-art visualization system reflects our dedication to a culture of excellence to advance research and teaching." ### About Mechdyne Corporation Mechdyne Corporation is the world’s largest company dedicated to consulting and development of immersive, networked and collaborative visualization solutions.
