Mechdyne and SGI Complete Interactive Visualization System for University of Colorado

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa - July 22, 2002 - Mechdyne Corporation, of Marshalltown, Iowa – along with SGI (NYSE: SGI), of Mountain View, California – has completed a large-scale visualization system for the University of Colorado. Located in the University's Discovery Learning Center, the flat-screen MD Wall™ system will be used primarily by the Engineering department for educational presentations and demonstrations.

The system is powered by an SGI® Onyx2® visualization supercomputer that sends high-fidelity imagery to the system's three color-matched LCD projectors, which then rear-project the imagery onto the rigid 15-foot by 6-foot screen. Rear projection allows users to approach and interact with the projected imagery without casting shadows. The unique "marker-friendly" screen surface allows the system to function also as a dry-erase whiteboard.

"We needed a robust system that could serve as both an interactive presentation tool and a traditional write-on display surface," said James Avery, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "Mechdyne was able to deliver exactly what we needed, and we are very pleased with the finished product."

This is the second visualization system Mechdyne has completed for the University of Colorado. In cooperation with SGI, Mechdyne also designed, engineered, and integrated a reconfigurable visualization system (MD Flex™) that serves as the cornerstone of the University's new BP Center for Visualization.
