A portal to fake universes may sound like science fiction, but it is now a reality at the Carnegie Observatories.

Mechdyne’s C6 is one of the most impressive virtual reality environments in the world; the 100 million pixel, six-sided C6 at Iowa State University’s Virtual Reality Applications Center (VRAC).

Mechdyne - Worlds Highest Resolution CAVE

Cornea

Mechdyne installed the 4K 6-sided CAVE in the Geometric Modeling and Scientific Visualization Research Center (GM&SVRC) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.  

Features

  • Displays 100 million pixel images for the viewer’s left eye and 100 million pixels for the right eye to produce the 3D effect.
  • Imagery is projected by 24 advanced Sony SXRD projectors each with 4K resolution (four per wall on the 10′ square wall screens).
  • Images are generated by a custom-designed visualization computing cluster with 96 channels of graphics output at 2048 x 1080 pixels each.
  • The room includes a custom-designed spatial audio system, developed in conjunction with Meyer Sound, to create an acoustic experience that mimics reality like no other system before.

Alliance Manchester Business School

Some data sets are so complex it’s hard to wrap one’s mind around them. So Mechdyne and Alliance Manchester Business School implemented a 3D visualization facility that literally wraps data around the user.

Data Visualization Observatory
University of Birmingham Digital Humanities Hub

University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham had the primary goal of using interactive technology to bring people together to encourage interaction and conversations about history. They wanted to organize content based on what the public wanted to see instead of what leadership thought the public wanted to see.

Mechdyne and the university partnered to create the Digital Humanities Hub to fuse research and exhibition space. Instead of consistently having to refresh their content, the museum provided access to all materials and archives that were scanned and cataloged in 2D and 3D formats. In the exhibition space, visitors virtually accessed artifacts and interacted with history:

  • On touchscreen tables.
  • With wall displays.
  • Using tablets.
  • Through gestures, users could rotate, manipulate, and zoom in and out on each artifact.

Bringing in the research aspect, the Hub invited visitors to wear motion-tracking headwear and glasses. As each person interacted with artifacts, a researcher collected statistics on which exhibits garnered the most interest. Their hope was to take these insights and begin curating more successful museum exhibits.

Humanities & Virtual Reality

BP

BP’s vision included two central Learning Centers, one in Houston and one in the UK, along with several other remote High-Definition Distance Learning environments placed strategically around the world. These high-quality training centers not only have distance learning capabilities that stream classes from one site to another but also provide specialized technologies that help facilitate the educational experience. Mechdyne worked with BP to design and implement technology that would allow BP’s experienced engineers to transfer their knowledge on to newer colleagues in a high-definition, interactive, and collaborative environment.
